But I agree with Steve Jobs on this issue. Here’s my example.
The Commonwealth Bank has a wonderful web app called Netbank. They trumpet that it’s been voted the best banking app 16 years in a row. Because it’s brilliantly intuitive and has some beautifully intuitive functionality.
They have literally hundreds of thousands of business and retail users. Nobody really needs training, but for complex issues - like what to do if you’ve been a victim of a scam - they have an A grade support team - and some neat protection- like delays in forwarding your hard earned cash until they have a chat with potential victims.
But there’s a clue in the 16 years… a lot of time and some very talented designers plus exhaustive testing. The product is updated regularly, but they take care to not scramble stuff that works well.
Few apps in my experience reach the dizzying heights of Netbank. That’s how to do away with ridiculous user-facing docos. But in agreement with your premise, I bet the developer- end docs are plentiful and hopefully also top class.
Interesting and well considered piece.
